Following on from my recent post on The Perfect Camel Coat – Inspired by Meghan Markle, if your social engagements and budget don’t really justify multiple coat purchases for the season, then you really can’t go wrong with a classic black one……..stylish, timeless, slimming, elegant I could go on !
Black is undoubtedly the most elegant and sophisticated hue and exceptionally timeless, so versatile it can be worn with almost anything. Historically I have associated long black coats with formal or corporate wear and in my mind at least, seemed a bit outdated in recent times. However with the Duchess’s style influence, it feels as though, now more than ever, a simple, beautiful coat is something that everyone is craving.
Whilst researching this post, I’ve actually had a bit of a moment and recovered from the depths of my wardrobe a long black “Jigsaw” coat from my London days. It’s actually indredibly similar to my most coveted Smythe Brando Coat in style, which goes to prove things really do come full circle and one should keep that in mind when trying to justify an investment piece.
There is no doubt that you can make a long black coat exceptionally current, by accessorising well with a structured bag, great boots/shoes/sneakers and a gorgeous pair of statement sunglasses (if the weather permits or perched on your head for the eternal optimist look). I’m a fan of the head-to-toe monochromatic and instantly a “current” everyday look for a stunning black coat as featured below.
Obviously, there is the much coveted Max Mara Manuela camel hair wrap coat in black worn by A-list Celebrities and Royal’s. However it’s Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and closer to home, I absolutely love New Zealand designer and label Taylor’s – Originate Coat, available at Taylor or The Shelter. Moochi’s – Assist Coat is also a fantastic everyday option. I hope this gives you some inspiration to re-invent that investment black coat in your wardrobe or make that purchase. From the budget friendly to all-out investment splurge. Check out some of my favourites below!
