The Best & Easiest Cafe-Quality Cheese Scone Recipe Ever!
There is no doubt that we are all desperate to get back to our favourite cafe! And if isolation and lockdown also make you reminisce about a gorgeous cafe-style Cheese Scone! Then look no further, as I have found the best and easiest cafe-quality Cheese Scone recipe ever!
(That is assuming you can get your hands on flour, which has now surpassed the pre-lockdown demand for toilet paper).
This recipe comes from a cafe in Wellington, New Zealand – Ministry of Food, and they are honestly the best cheese scones ever (thanks to Stuff for publishing the recipe way back in 2015).
Life doesn’t get much better than a coffee and a freshly baked cheese scone! You can enjoy while reading a book from my recent post, 12 Great Books to Read – That You Won’t Be Able to Put Down. You’ll almost forget you are at home and what day of isolation it is!
I guarantee that you will love them. Enjoy!

The Best & Easiest Cafe-Quality Cheese Scone Recipe
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 cups grated tasty cheese
- 1 cup full-cream milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 220º C.
- Put the tray in the oven to heat.
- Sift flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cayenne pepper into a bowl.
- Mix in the cheese.
- Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk.
- Mix lightly, then turn out on a floured bench.
- Shape into a rectangle about 3cm high. Cut into 8 and transfer onto a hot baking tray.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes at 220º C until golden brown.
The recipe doesn’t call for a hot tray; however, according to all great scone-makers, a hot tray and the least possible mixing make for the best scones.
