The 12 Best New Zealand Designer Crossbody Bags | This post is dedicated to several New Zealand-based handbag designers who, in an environment where local manufacturing and design are tough businesses, are forging ahead and making their name on the world stage. I have selected what I would consider the 12 Best New Zealand Designer Crossbody Bags currently available.
The Crossbody Bag
I have always been obsessed with large, oversized, hold-all-style handbags. However, there is no doubt that the simple Crossbody Bag is definitely having a moment. A Crossbody Bag is a classic style that is unlikely to go out of fashion any time soon, and it’s a practical and versatile addition to your wardrobe. Crossbody bags appear to be a current must-have fashion item for teenagers and women of all ages.
The following Crossbody Bags are all minimalist with a touch of elegance and timelessness. I personally avoid designer handbags with overwhelming logos, hardware, bold prints and price tags and prefer understated and elegant without the need for an extortionate investment of money.
New Zealand Handbag Designers
One of New Zealand’s current most famous and coveted handbag designers is, without a doubt, “Deadly Ponies“. So much so that I struggled not to include three of their crossbody bags in this post. Deadly Ponies is a brand synonymous with handcrafted quality and luxurious natural materials. Their bags are relatively expensive but worth it for the timeless pieces that create a classic and enduring aesthetic. Celebrity devotees include Lorde, Eva Longoria and Charlize Theron, which clearly indicates it has the status of a luxury brand.
Other highly coveted brands are Yu Mei, a leather goods label devoted to creating understated luxury and Saben, with beautifully textured leathers and intuitively functional design.
Worthy also of inclusion is Wanaka-based designer Common People. Also, relatively new Christchurch designer Anna White is creating a luxury line of handbags with exquisite materials and an air of the timeless and classic elegance of the Birkin or the YSL tote. And finally, whilst not solely a handbag bag designer, New Zealand’s incredibly famous fashion designer Karen Walker.
It was hard not to include a Briarwood bag in this post. For over 25 years, New Zealand brand Briarwood has been creating handbags synonymous with quality and effortless chic.
Available in New Zealand
Lastly, I have included two handbag designers which, while not designed locally, are widely available in New Zealand and on my most coveted list. The brand Status Anxiety’s ethos is simple, uncomplicated and minimal, yet high in quality and aesthetic design. Also, VASH Bags are crafted from genuine leather with designs that pass the test of time, favouring the functional and fuss-free, with a strong emphasis on beautiful texture.
The Summary
In all honesty, a classic leather Crossbody Bag almost always goes with everything; it’s convenient, timeless and an excellent investment. I hope you have found some
